Building Department
Administration
The Administration Department of the City of Solvang includes the City Manager, City Clerk and City Attorney.
City Manager
The City Manager is appointed by City Council and is the administrative head of the City and is responsible for the efficient administration of all affairs of the City which are under his control including personnel, organization, laws and ordinances. He has a duty to see that all franchises, contracts, permits and privileges granted by the City Council are faithfully observed and to recommend to the City Council for adoption such measures and ordinances as he deems necessary.
City Clerk
The City Clerk performs all City Council support services, is the official custodian of all City records, and is responsible for the recording and filing of all ordinances, resolutions, and motions which may be enacted by the City Council. The City Clerk also serves as the City's Risk Manager and Emergency Coordinator.
The City Clerk is the local official who administers democratic processes such as elections, access to city records, and all legislative actions ensuring transparency to the public. The City Clerk acts as a compliance and filing officer for federal, state, and local statutes including the Political Reform Act, the Brown Act, and the Public Records Act. The City Clerk manages public inquiries and relationships and arranges for ceremonial and official functions.
City Attorney
The City of Solvang contracts for City Attorney services with the firm of Hanley and Fleishman, LLP.

Santa Ynez Valley Transit
Santa Ynez Valley Transit (SYVT) is a Joint-Powers Agency funded by the Cities of Buellton and Solvang, as well as Santa Barbara County. SYVT links Ballard, Buellton, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and Solvang.

Emergency Preparedness
Sand is available in the green box in the southwestern corner of the Solvang Veterans Memorial Building parking lot. There are also a limited supply of sandbags available in the box. If there are no sandbags in the box, residents may purchase unfilled sandbags at Valley Hardware, Nielsen's Building Supply, Farm Supply, or Harrison Ace Hardware. Filled sandbags are also available for purchase at Nielsen's Building Supply and Santa Ynez Stone and Topsoil. Other locations where sand is available: Buellflat Rock, Fire Station 31 in Buellton (Free- but limited supply), Santa Ynez Stone, and Valley Hardware.

Planning & Community Development
The purpose of the Planning and Community Development Department is to plan for, and promote reasonable and productive long-term uses of land, which foster environmental protection and economic prosperity within the city. Solvang is a unique community with its historic past and its desire to preserve, protect and promote the Danish and Northern European architectural design theme so prevalent in the Downtown Village.
It is a common understanding in Solvang that preserving and perpetuating the architectural charm of the area will enhance the social and economic base of the community. The Department works with the community to support and maintain this unique Danish identity.
Environmental, Planning & Zoning
The Planning and Community Development Department must also implement city and state environmental, planning and zoning laws. This entails the review and recommendation on development proposals to the Board of Architectural Review, the Planning Commission, and the City Council. It also requires the maintenance and update of the city's General Plan, and the enforcement of the city's Zoning Regulations.

The Department provides high quality zoning and planning information, and permitting services through a professional and courteous public process under policy direction of the City Council, the Planning Commission and the Planning and Economic Development Director.

Public Safety
Fire Department
The City of Solvang is part of the Santa Barbara County Fire District. Our station is #30 and is housed in the same building as City Hall, at 1644 Oak Street.

Police Department
The City of Solvang contracts with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement services. For non-emergency police calls, please call 805-686-5000.
The Solvang Sheriff Substation is located at 1745 Mission Drive.
The City of Solvang Substation serves the community of Solvang and the outlying unincorporated areas of the Santa Ynez Valley including Los Olivos, Lake Cachuma, Santa Ynez and Los Alamos.
